Acrylic or Alkyd Enamel Paint: Which Should You Choose?

Compare acrylic and alkyd paints by their base, drying time and application conditions.

What Is Acrylic Paint?

Acrylic paints are water-based and typically dry faster with less odour. Their flexible finish makes them a practical choice for many interior and exterior applications when the product is rated for the surface.

What is alkyd enamel paint?

Alkyd paints are solvent-based and form a hard, abrasion-resistant finish. They generally take longer to dry and should be applied in a well-ventilated space.

How to Compare the Differences

Paint Base

Acrylic is water-based; alkyd enamel is solvent-based. The base affects odour, thinning and tool cleaning.

Drying Time

Acrylic often dries faster, but always check the technical data sheet for the specific product.

Surface Hardness

After full curing, alkyd enamel generally forms a harder surface.

Application Conditions

Acrylic has lower odour; ensure adequate ventilation when applying either type.

Which Should You Choose for Your Project?

Consider the surface, required finish, indoor or outdoor exposure and application conditions. Choose a product rated for that use, and compare its technical data sheet before purchase. If unsure, ask our technical team.

Cleaning Tools after Painting

Water-based paints such as acrylic can generally be cleaned from tools with water. Alkyd enamel requires the suitable thinner specified in its data sheet. Reseal the container after use to protect the remaining paint.
